Kid Astronaut

Is like your first glimpse of the California coastline before touching down in El Segundo

And if Kid Astronaut had his way, it would probably be your last before entering the stratosphere aboard SpaceX.

The Denver-based pop artist fuses hip-hop, R&B, and soul to make music that fits his space- and time-traveling ego. His latest release, an 8-track album titled Cosmos, is Kid Astronaut’s future-most looking installment to date. Despite familiar piano chords and sexy bass lines, Kid explores a cosmic narrative in which he rides a spaceship full of love, ecstasy and existentialism. As the story goes, the time-traveling Astronaut hits a portal that sends him into an alternate past dimension set back in the year 2015. With his band, The Nebula, Kid Astronaut sets out to assimilate to the past while blending into his new reality...

Surely, it’s a lot to unpack.

The visions of a California coastline are evoked through tracks like “Love You Like God Does,” which combines a floating guitar melody with harps, harmonies, and a sung-not-spoken delivery that nods to Blond.

But music isn’t the only thing on Kid Astronaut’s mind. He’s also the entrepreneurial spirit behind projects like ART HOUSE, the Golden Cloud Cannabis Company, and a fresh food marketplace called Garden. If his music emulates Frank Ocean, perhaps his business ethos emulates Aubrey Graham.

We had the unique opportunity to capture Kid’s performance at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science’s Space Odyssey exhibit, complete with Mars diorama and Star Trek-inspired spaceship decor. Big shoutout to Shelsea Ochoa of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science staff for coordinating the shoot, and sticking with us through three hours of production.

The songs performed, in order, are “Cosmos,” “The Alchemist,” and “Elevate.” Beau Osland, a member of The Nebula and solo Denver-based musician, provided support on the strings.
